Nitrous oxide, also known as 'laughing gas' is available in our office to help anxious patients receive the treatment that they need without having to experience unnecessary fear. Nitrous oxide is a type of sedative gas that is inhaled during treatment through a nosepiece to relax patients and to relieve anxiety.
Most people report that nitrous oxide induces the same mental state of relaxation that having a couple glasses of wine does. While inhaling nitrous oxide, you will still be awake and be able to answer questions. You will be aware of what is happening around you and to you but, the difference is that you will not care.
Nitrous oxide is very quick acting and short lasting. Five minutes after it is turned on, you start feeling its effects and, 5 minutes after it is turned off, you will be back to normal and ready to return to your normal activities. You can drive yourself to and from the appointment and can return immediately to work or school after your appointment. Almost anyone of any age can receive nitrous oxide sedation (exceptions include pregnant women and COPD patients) as it is an extremely safe sedative agent.
